This blog is intended for those who walk less than 4 Km a day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American College of Sports Medicine and the Surgeon General recommend that at least 30 minutes of brisk physical exercise is good for your health and walking is one of the easiest forms of exercise to get.
Walk because:
Better Heart health – Brisk walking strengthens your heart, improves your circulation, and lowers your blood pressure. A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine evaluated 73,743 postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study and found that women who walked briskly 2.5 hours every week reduced their chance of heart disease by 30 percent.
Improved bone mass - As a weight-bearing exercise, walking can stop some of the bone loss of osteoporosis and may slow down arthritis.
Helps in weight loss – A regular walking workout burns calories. If you walk 4 Km four times a week, you can walk off about a 1 Kg of fat every month. Weight loss combined with a healthy diet can also decrease your risk of type 2 diabetes.

We love our family. We earn for our family. We cook for our family. We should EAT one meal with our family daily.
A family that eats at least one meal together has many health benefits to it:
Improves Family Bond - Sitting and sharing a meal increases love and respect for the family.
Meals are Nutritious – Home cooked meals for whole family are healthier as are less in oil, salt and spices.
Encourages Healthy Habits - sharing and eating a common meal at the table encourages eating healthier foods especially by children.
DesiDieter experts preach “Encourage Your Children To EAT With YOU.”
According to diet expert Tina Khanna, Children and teenagers who eat meals together with their family:
Eat more fruits and vegetables when they grow up
- Drink less soft drinks
- Have more vitamins, calcium and fiber in diet
Also, studies indicate that children do better in school when they eat more meals with their parents and family.
DesiDieter Dietitian Sweta propagates “Say NO to EATING in FRONT of TV!”. Eating dinner or snacking in front of the TV is linked to overeating. When you’re distracted, you’re not mindful of the meal you are eating, causing you to eat more without realizing it or really enjoying your food.

Breast cancer patients who take antioxidants may have an increased or decreased risk of death or recurrent cancer, depending on which vitamin they use, a new study suggests.
Researchers found that among nearly 2,300 women with early-stage breast cancer, those who regularly used either vitamins C or E had a lower risk of cancer recurrence over five years than those who didn’t use the vitamins.
On the other hand, women who regularly took a mix of carotenoids had a higher risk of dying from breast cancer, or any other cause, than women who did not take them. Carotenoids include nutrients like vitamin A, beta-carotene and lutein.
The findings, reported in the journal Cancer, do not prove that any of the antioxidants are the reason for the effects seen.

There are as many as 100 types of cancer out there and Steve Jobs contracted one of the rare prostrate ones. We miss him and his absence makes sense to start thinking about what you can do to
prevent cancer yourself. Lance Armstrong, Lisa Ray are Cancer Challengers. While there are no guarantees in life, there are four simple ways in which you may be able to reduce your risk.
Eat More Fiber. Plenty of research indicates that fruits and vegetables in diet are able to help protect against cancer. They’re loaded with vitamins, minerals, and helpful compounds called phytochemicals – all of which work together to fight disease and keep you healthy. It is the Fiber that flushes out the toxins and keeps your system cancer free. Aim for at least nine servings of fruits and veggies each day!
No Smoking Please. You’ll prevent more than just lung cancer! While smoking is believed to cause almost 90 percent of all lung cancer deaths, it may also be involved in cancers of the throat, esophagus, larynx (voice box), kidneys, pancreas, stomach, cervix, and bladder. Plus, if you stop smoking, you’ll stop exposing those around you — including your family — to harmful secondhand smoke.

Nutritionist are not recognised in India due to following reasons: 1)there is lack of health awareness and the importance of food as medicines 2)doctors do not give importance to dieticians. On the contrary they give dietary advice to patients (ps: which is partial and incomparable to a nutritionist/dietician’s advice) so people do not feel the need to visit nutritionist and r not willing to shell extra money for their fees.( commonest faulty dietary advice by a doc: have banana for calcium and beet root for iron, but people believe wht doc says blindly)
3)in India, dietician/nutritionist means only for weight loss, people r unaware bout the therApeutic n clinical side of it.

To bring bout a change 1) we need to improve course structure from home science to a special paramedical nutrition course with a strict degree ( no doc or those pursuing a 3/6 month nutrition course should be allowed to term themselves as nutritionist)

This may sound like a tabloid preaching but it is a scientific fact: Eat More, Lose More.
You didn’t have time to eat breakfast, and you got so busy with work or errands that you missed lunch; now it’s about 2 p.m. and your tummy is grumbling. Didn’t pack a tiffin and so you hit the office cafeteria. Grab a thaali and devour everything laden with fat before you rush back to your seat.
Whew! If some version of this scenario happens to you more often than not, it’s time you get onto DesiDieter’s regular eating schedule.

Thanksgiving will be celebrated on Thursday, November 24, 2011.
Thanksgiving Day is a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Because of the longstanding traditions of the holiday, the celebration often extends to the weekend that falls closest to the day it is celebrated. It is primarily recognition of harvest and praising good fortune for the year.
The centerpiece of contemporary Thanksgiving in the United States and Canada is a large meal, generally centered on a large roasted turkey. The majority of the dishes in the traditional American version of Thanksgiving dinner are made from foods native to the New World, as according to tradition the Pilgrims received these foods from the Native Americans.
